Parish of San Miguel Arcangel

It is the most representative icon of the city, and it is impossible for it to go unnoticed. The original parish church was built in the late 17th century to a modest, conventional design. Already in the 19th century (between 1880 and 1890) the bricklayer Zeferino Gutiérrez built a new façade inspired by drawings, engravings and postcards of cathedrals in Europe. It is one of the most photographed churches in Mexico.

San Felipe Neri
Oratory

It could be disturbing to think that behind the altar of this oratory the image of a calf is hidden, an undeniable symbol of paganism. According to legend, and to avoid looting at the time of the Revolution, the priests hid the church's treasures in a branded calf that remains there to this day. At first it was an Indian chapel, and its "Spanishization" occurred until 1720; That is why it has a "more indigenous" style than the rest of the temples in the center of San Miguel. Its “eccentricity” is due to the colorful offerings that people leave near the statue of Martín de Porres. The Pilgrimage of Silence begins in this oratory on Friday of Holy Week.

Temple of San Francisco

The venue is located in one of the Plaza de San Francisco, one of the most typical and photographable places in San Miguel Allende. Construction began in 1778 and it took more than 20 years to complete, so there are architectural changes depending on the period and fashion. Its wonder lies in the work on stone, an art that reached its maximum splendor here at the end of the 18th century.

The main interest, in addition to its already mentioned architectural singularity, consists in comparing it with the church next to it called “De La Tercera Orden”. They are a century and a half apart, and one can see the change between a pioneer society and a wealthy community at the height of pre-Revolution peace. It was partially financed by donations from local families and partially by funds acquired through bullfighting.
